Lời dẫn :  Một cú điện thoại bàn, số lạ,  vợ tôi chuyển  ;" cứ nghe đi ...  rồi trả lời ".  Vợ tôi  thường  trách , sồ điện thoại lạ hiện  trên đi động, thường là bị tôi cúp. "... Phải nghe mới biết ai gọi, người ta nói gì chứ..."  !  Vợ tôi trách  vậy  , còn  tôi chưa dễ  bỏ thói quen cũ !

              Cô HOA TRẦN cho biết, một  cựu chiến binh Mỹ  từng phục vụ ở Việtnam  1972,  đã gửi  mail  yêu cầu được gặp,  lại  không thấy tôi trả lời .

              ... I am returning to Ho Chi Minh City to film the experience and to find out how the country had changed over the last 40 years . This film is called ' REMEMBRANCE ' and will include footage I shot in 1972  (...)

     The Laughing Buddha


   For the Chinese " old hemp-bag bum,"
  wandering monk, is the future savior 
  of the world.  He fulfills the hopes
  of every pious Buddhist . Pu- tai
  Ho-Shang, smiling foolishy, with
  bald head and pot belly, is Lord
  Maitreya --- the Buddha Reborn whom
  no one recognizes.   He wanders
  through villages and markets begging
  for pickles, fish, meat which he chomps down on.
  He puts the rest in
  sack on a stick.  Children chase  him
  asking, " What's in your hemp bag, Mister ?"

 He spills the contents on the grounds ---
 alms bowl, clogs, bricks, stones ---
 pick up each item, saying " Look here."
 He asks pointing at it ," What is this ?"
 " What is it about your bag ?" they ask.
  He puts it down on the ground , crosses
 his arms, and remains silent.   The followers
 of Ch' an or Zen  continue with questions :

 Why did the Bodhiharma come from the West
 to China?" He puts his bag on the earth,
 crosses his arms  once again. "  Is that
all there is to it ?" they plead. Pu-tai
shouders  his bag and walks away.   He
wraps shit in leaves and preaches, " This
 is the ground of the inner courtyard of
 Maitreya."  Mi-lo-fo, the Coming Buddha !

The kids run away from the carzy
 master !  All the biographies state
Pu-tai, a resident  of Ssu-ming in the
province of Chekiang, was born in the 10th century.
 When asked how old he was,
 he replied : " My bag here is as old
 as space "  The bellows of the universe,
 the emptiness between heaven and earth .
He claimed his surname was Li, like
Lao Tsu, author of the Tao-te-ching. He
once approached a  monk from behind, tapping
his shoulder, begging " Give me cash!"
The famous  kungan, or koan goes :" If the
truth or tao is found, I will give you money. "
" What are you doing here" all the villagers
and whorshippers begin to scream.. ." I am
 waiting for a man ," he replies." Here he is ."


He takes an orange out  from under his robe,
offers it to the monk who reaches for it.
" You are not that man." Pu-tai withdraws
the orange, preachingh" Give me cash."
So when you walk into a Chinese restaurant
and see a laughing Ho-ti or Pu-tai, fat-
bellied dwarf, with a bald head and
 red face ... realize he is there to
 enlighten you.  Get out your wallet !
